It’s Juneteenth! This holiday marks the day in 1865 when the Emancipation Proclamation was finally enforced in Texas, freeing enslaved Black Americans—a full 900 days after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Proclamation. Juneteenth has been celebrated in Texas since 1867, but it only became a federal holiday in 2021 due to the persistent efforts of activist Dr. Opal Lee. If you, like me, are a non-Black person who has today off, consider spending it with a book from this post. Please consider purchasing that book from a Black-owned bookstore via Bookshop.org or Libro.fm. If you can’t purchase a book today, maybe you can visit your local public library! #JuneteenthReadingList #Juneteenth #ReadDiverseBooks #BlackAuthors [IDs: Carousel consists of 9 slides. Slide 1 is a graphic with black text that says “Juneteenth Book Recommendations” above a drawing of two Black people, one holding the red, black, and green Pan African flag and the other holding the blue, white, and red Juneteenth flag designed by Ben Haith in 1997 and revised by Lisa Jeanne Graf. Slides 2-5 are grids of book covers - nonfiction (cultural studies & history), nonfiction (essays & memoir), fiction, and kids’ books. Slides 6-9 are a continuous, bullet-pointed list of U.S. Black-owned bookshops. Book titles are in the pinned comment and alt text. Bookshop names are in the alt text.]
